Ranitidine is an oral prescribe medication that belongs to the drug classification called H2 or histamine 2 blockers. Histamine, scientifically speaking, is a chemical that is naturally occurs in the person’s stomach and functions as a stimulator of the stomach’s cells or otherwise known as parietal cells to be able to produce acid.

Lastly, ranitidine is also indicated to persons who suffer from Zollinger Ellison syndrome which is a medical term that is given when a person’s stomach is able to produce excessive acid.

- Preventing stress ulcers or stress ulcer prophylaxis
- Stomach damage due to over usage of NSAIDs or nonsteroidal anti inflammatory drugs
- Aspiration of the stomach when the person undergoes anesthesia
- Treating upper portion of the gastrointestinal bleeding
- Erosive esophagitis
- Protect from duodenal and peptic ulcers
Ranitidine Mechanism of Action
As mentioned earlier, the ranitidine is a Histamine 2 antagonist which works to inhibit the histamine at the parietal cell located in the stomach. What it does is it suppresses the secretion of the acid of the parietal cells and the stimulation of the acid secretion after the consumption of food. It does not at all affect the pentagastrin stimulated factor secretion or otherwise known as serum gastrin and pepsin secretion.
What it does is that the ranitidine will bind at the H2 receptor sites on the parietal cells in the stomach. Once this happens, there will be a reduction of the nocturnal and basal gastric acid secretion. Another action of ranitidine is that it will increase the bacterial flora in the gastric aspect such bacteria like nitrate reducing kind of organism.
Ranitidine Side Effects
The side effects that are associated when one uses ranitidine are as follows:
- Pain in the muscles
- Easy bleeding
- Losing of hair
- Stomach pain
- Jaundice of the eyes or skin
- Changes in the visual aspect
Aside from the ones mentioned above, ranitidine may also lead to other serious side effects.
