Summertime and the living is easy…and completely inspired by vintage cool and Mad Men sheik. The 50’s fashion, 60’s shapes, and flowing 70’s silhouettes are all making big statements this summer.
The runways have been flooded with fashions from retro bygone eras. Marc Jacobs featured high-waisted hot pants, tight zigzag knits, satin flares, and halter-style maxi dresses, all completed with platform touches and oversized shades.
Some fashion forecasters believe that our cues for nostalgia and our love for 50’s and 60’s fashions can be a product of the current economic climate. Looking back to a familiar good time feels like a safe choice when our own economic futures have such a heavy air of the unknown.
Swimwear is seeing a major revival in 40’s and 50’s silhouettes. Retro bathing suits, including one-piece options, are accented with sweetheart necklines and boy-leg bottoms. Suits are also featuring two-piece styles complete with halter style tops and high-wasted briefs. The diverge from barely there bikini cuts to classic, retro clothes has been a gradual shift, but designers and retailers are seeing the new styles sell like crazy. Fashion forecasters believe that the retro swimwear look will have some serious staying power.
It’s almost impossible to deny the fact that the return to ladylike 1950’s fashion like full circle skirts and dresses with nipped in waists has been largely fueled by the Mad Men fire that swept the world. While the Mad Men look is extremely specific, key elements from the likes of Betty Draper and Joan Holloway’s sexy, throwback wardrobe are making their way into the modern girls closet. Cropped, cuffed denim jeans are worn with cute espadrilles and oversized cocktail rings are making their way into every day accessories. Be on the look out for the 50’s style sundresses that are sweeping the runways.
For women, the key fashion elements are feminine and masculine and definitely retro inspired. With the summer heat women want to look sexy without looking overly fussy or feeling like they’re being suffocated in layers of uncomfortable fabrics.
